Was it...fixed...in place because it had reached a certain developmental stage or was it purely chance that it stayed put long enough to be looked at by a steady stream of gas bar patrons?
Ariel it was purely chance. The adult moth at this stage only lives about a week. They don't feed, their sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs then die, and since they are attracted to bright lights, this one probably landed there at night and as long as it wasn't disturbed too much, it would have stayed all day and left in the evening to find a mate.

How lovely...even the fish fly.
Thanks Ariel - I feel very fortunate to have seen it, (Thanks to B getting out and stretching her legs)let alone photograph it.
I agree, it's gorgeous!
Thanks Tracy

Very cool. Also slightly humorous that you had a field guide in the trunk.
Also, thanks for the gift. It's amazing.
Thanks Rhett - I think we carry more field guides in our trunk than the Nature section in some book stores :-)
I'm glad it got there.
